From objects George Vanderbilt acquired during his many trips abroad to pieces commissioned by his descendants and beyond, the collection of more than 92,000 items housed at Biltmore is vast and varied. Once you reach Biltmore House and park, you may need to take a shuttle to the house itself–or alternatively, if you get fairly close parking, walk 8-10 minutes to the house. In-person tours are also available but are far more expensive (around $200 per person, give or take). If you happen to be visiting when the intricate model train system is running, all the better.

The rear western elevation is less elaborate than the front facade, with some windows not having any decoration at all. Two matching polygonal towers in the center are connected to the polygonal south turret by an open loggia that opens the main rooms of the house to the views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. The loggia is decorated overhead with terracotta tiles set in a herringbone pattern. The self-supporting ceramic tile vault and arch system was used extensively inside and outside of Biltmore, and was patented by Rafael Guastavino, a Spanish architect and engineer who personally supervised the installation.

Seeing the majestic appearance of Biltmore House today, you almost believe it was always part of the landscape. In reality, it was a monumental construction project as these photos from the Biltmore archives show in the first of two blog posts. The house is a staggering 175,000 square feet (four acres) with 33 bedrooms, 65 fireplaces and 43 bathrooms. The entire estate originally covered 125,000 acres (now it's a modest 8,000 acres). The dinner table seats 38 with plenty of space for additional small tables.
