The activity deck comprises the aquapark "Splash Valley", the ropes course "Altitude Skywalk" (P&O fleet's first), and the tropical island-themed "Altitude Minigolf" course (open through the day and nightly illuminated). The 3-deck high Grand Atrium is located midship and has an open-floor design. All Atrium levels have natural light and offer floor-ceiling sea views.

Other than its size, the first striking feature of Arvia is the high number of balcony cabins. As with all large vessels, that stated capacity of 5,200 is based on double occupancy of rooms. So during the summer, when many children stay in the same room as their parents, the actual number of people onboard can be up to 1,000 more.

A new addition to The Quays -- a multiple-venue piazza first rolled out on Iona to replicate a street-food-style setting -- Roast Carvery is set to reinvent the classic Sunday roast. We're big fans of escape rooms and excited to try the two one-hour experiences (one for adults and one family-friendly) for ourselves. The ship is designed to minimize its environmental impact, with features such as a state-of-the-art waste management system and energy-efficient technology.

Complete with whirlpools, loungers, infinity pools and even a swim-up bar, this is the perfect place to soak up the sunshine on your P&O Cruises' voyage. The recently-launched ‘Excel class’ ships Iona and Arvia rival some of the world’s biggest cruise ships for activities, while retaining the very British experience that the line is known for. Dining opportunities are specifically aimed at the British market and feature the cuisine of international chefs Shivi Ramoutar and Jose Pizzaro, with a focus on Caribbean and Mediterranean cuisine. The main dining venues are the Zenith Restaurant (deck 7), Meridian Restaurant (deck 6), Olive Grove, 6th Street Diner, and casual dining in the Horizon all-day buffet (deck 16).

The ceremony was held at Meyer Werft's Papenburg shipyard, while the Protocol for Delivery and Acceptance was signed by Paul Ludlow in Bremerhaven Germany. Like most large-sized newbuilds, the P&O ship Arvia is LNG-powered, with 4x engines generating combined output 61.7 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters with combined power output 74 MW. The vessel has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft), gas capacity 520 m3.

During the day, the Beachcomber hosts pool deck activities, while in the evenings, the sundeck transforms into an entertainment venue with aerial acrobatic performances and live music, also hosting deck parties under the stars. But despite the two 5,200-passenger cruise ships being structurally nearly identical, Arvia is by no means a carbon copy of Iona. Arvia has a top deck mini golf and high-ropes course and swim-up bar -- firsts for P&O Cruises. The popularity of these amenities, however, has introduced some congestion to the top deck's wake pool area which tends to get crowded early on in the day.

Aero Maleth has no entertainment for such a long flight and the stewards didn’t seem keen on serving too many drinks. We were delayed both ways and I think for the same problem; something not sliding into place in the hold. Otherwise, I would recommend the trip, just make sure you’re on a different flight. But whereas Iona was built for colder climate cruising, Arvia is very much designed for warmer weather, spending most of the year touring the Mediterranean with a short winter season in the Caribbean. This was a 1st family holiday, booked by our daughter and SIL, travelling with our granddaughter and inlaws.
